Helmsley Recreational Project
Design 4 were approached by the Trustees of the Helmsley Recreational Charity to explore the options for replacing the existing recreational facility at the sports fields in Helmsley.
The existing building which is now in a poor condition is located adjacent to an outdoor pool, outdoor bowling facilities and tennis courts and houses changing facilities and a bar area.
The outdoor pool has its own changing areas which again are in need of some remedial work.
Planning permission has been secured for a new ambitious replacement sports and recreational facility which will include a multipurpose sports hall, function rooms, bowling club, ground floor community area with café, first floor restaurant and new changing facilities for the pool. The pool will also be provided with a retractable sliding glass roof to enable it to be used all year round.
The site lies within the North York Moors National Park and as such the building has been designed to be visually sensitive with the use of natural slate and stone, combined with cedar cladding and galvanised steel to create a subtle palette of materials that will weather over time to blend with the landscape.
An air source heat pump and the use of extensive solar panels will serve to offset the significant energy requirements of the building and the pool.
